Each year on June 1, we get a chance to celebrate parents. Unlike Mother’s Day or Father’s Day this is a chance to recognise the love, care, and support that families create every day.

We didn’t make this one up for the sake of our mission. In fact, the origins of Global Day of Parents comes from the efforts of the United Nations to promote family values and child welfare around the world. It was created to appreciate parents across the globe for their “selfless commitment to children and their lifelong sacrifice toward nurturing this relationship.”

We all know the importance of strong and connected families. They provide stability, safe spaces to grow, and shape the futures of younger generations. And when guardians come together to make that possible, it’s surely something to celebrate.

The best celebrations are often the ones that feel fun, personal, and creative. It shouldn’t rely on expensive plans or big events to make the day special. Your own small traditions and activities might be all you need to create lasting memories.

But being a parent is busy work, so we have done the heavy lifting to find some ways you can celebrate as a family.

1. Get Outdoors

Time spent outside together is a great way to connect away from usual routines. This could look like a picnic at a local park, a nature walk, or even a backyard scavenger hunt. Younger children simply enjoy moments where they can participate, explore, and spend uninterrupted time with their parents – so consider leaving the phones at home.

2. Create Memories

Creative projects are another great option. Making handmade cards, drawing family portraits, or creating a “gratitude jar” filled with notes about things they love about each family member are all ways to connect more while testing your creative talents. Art is a great way to show gratitude and spending time making gifts that can turn into memories will allow your kids to give back.

3. Cook Up Connections

We all know that time spent around the table can just become part of the daily routine. So, why not cook together and prepare your favourite meal? Kids can decide the menu and start learning family recipes or decorate a cake for dessert. Sharing food is something all cultures have gathered for for centuries. There’s no reason you can’t use this day as a chance to make it extra special for yourselves.

4. Tell Your Stories

Another meaningful tradition that’s long been handed down is storytelling. Parents can share funny or heartwarming stories from their own childhoods, while children can talk about their favorite family memories. If you want to get creative, you can all make up your own stories and perform them for each other. It’s a great way to remind the whole family that their voices matter and make space for everyone to share memories they love with each other.

International Parents Day is ultimately about connection. So, if you can't celebrate on June 1, don’t worry. These moments can and should live year round when your family needs them most. Whether you spend the day outdoors, crafting together, or simply sharing quality time from home, the most important part is creating moments that will last a lifetime.
